Staff Profile: Louise Kelly-Hope, M Trop Health, PhD
Appointment: Project Manager (Scientific) - Operational Research
Areas of interest: Infectious disease epidemiology, geographical information systems and remote sensing technologies, environmental analyses and the development of user-friendly surveillance systems for control and elimination programmes in developing countries.
Louise Kelly-Hope joins the Centre for Neglected Tropical Diseases (CNTD) and with a wide range of international experience. She completed her PhD at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research in 2002, where she investigated risk factors for Australian arboviral diseases and identified mechanisms for improved surveillance and control. Subsequently she travelled and worked on a variety of projects examining the epidemiology and ecology of parasitic, filarial, arboviral and bacterial diseases at the Fogarty International Center, National Institutes of Health, USA and with the Vector Group at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK.
Louise uses tools such as geographical information systems and remote sensing technologies to analyse spatio-temporal distributions of disease, collect and manage environmental and human population data, identify risk groups and possible casual factors. In recent years, her work has focused on vector-borne disease epidemiology, environmental mapping, and the development of protocols and standardised surveillance systems for large-scale and local control programmes in developing countries.
As scientific Project Manager, her role in the CNTD includes managing and performing operational research projects in endemic countries to support the evidence base for the lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination strategy and apply tools for assessing progress. She will also be responsible for providing evidence for the interruption of LF transmission in countries not undertaking mass drug administration. She will play a key role in collaborating with country health professionals, and providing technical assistance in preparing proposals for external fellowships, research grants and manuscripts for publication.
