Research

Since being founded in 1898, LSTM has been at the forefront of research into infectious, debilitating and disabling diseases worldwide. Today, our research continues to improve the health of the world's poorest people, with research and partnerships active in more than 70 countries worldwide.
The Centre for Tropical and Infectious Diseases (CTID) provides a world class lab facility to address new challenges in the treatment of infectious diseases through drug and vaccine design and development, initiation and management of clinical trials, pesticide and vector control design and development and cell and molecular biology pathogen research.
Research at LSTM takes a whole system approach, taking lab based research to clinical trials and on to implementation of health systems, where evidence-based studies inform the next generation of research in the laboratory. Research ranges from studies devoted to improved delivery of health services to poor and disadvantaged populations, through social science research and clinical intervention studies, to basic studies in the molecular sciences, genomics and the immunology of communicable diseases.
Research income is currently £192 million, with significant funding coming from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the UK’s Department for International Development, the Wellcome Trust and the European Union Framework Programme.
Our worldwide reputation has secured a leading role in international consortia and product development partnerships, including the £10 million EU-funded AntiMal research project, the $23 million Anti-Wolbachia Consortium (A-WOL) and the £30 million Malaria in Pregnancy Consortium. We host the IVCC, a not for profit product development partnership committed to improving the effectiveness of vector control products. LSTM is a partner in Liverpool’s new Biomedical Research Centre and a collaborating partner in the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust research programme based in Blantyre, Malawi.
Research at LSTM is organised into academic groups. More detailed information on research at LSTM can be found on the individual group pages in this section.
Research Degrees
LSTM trains the researchers of the future through taught courses and postgraduate research degrees. More details of the courses, PhD programme and how to apply, can be found at in the Learning and Teaching pages.
Excellent students with the potential to become future leaders in their field may be eligible for a funding under the LSTM PhD Studentship Programme. Details of the PhD topics available for support under an LSTM PhD Studentship and information on how to apply can be found on the Research Degrees pages.
