The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is a charity and an institute of higher education, with both research and teaching strengths; it delivers services in the UK and in selected countries overseas. It is an independent organisation, affiliated to the University of Liverpool.
The School is governed by a board of trustees and run by the Director and management team. The job of the trustees is to develop, with management, the strategy of the School and to monitor its implementation. It protects the core values of the School, which are directed towards the protection of the health of the poorest people in tropical areas of the world.
The majority of trustees are independent of the School and contribute their expertise from the fields of business, law, accountancy, higher education, politics and the public sector, with both local and international experience. In addition two trustees are nominated by the University of Liverpool and two, including the Director, come from the School itself.
In addition to the trustees, the School has a very distinguished Patron, President and Vice-Presidents and a large group of members who support the activities of the School. Trustees serve for fixed terms of office and there is annual recruitment of one or more members. Suitably qualified individuals are invited to enquire (of the Secretary) about becoming a trustee or member of this very special institution.
