One of my most memorable experiences from LSTM was meeting the fantastic 2010/11 MIPH class; it has been wonderful being a part of this great and amazing class. We have helped one another throughout the year and we ended up bonding like a family. What impressed me the most was LSTM’s ability to source for topics and co-ordinate overseas projects for students outside their home countries; co-ordinating these projects can be rather challenging but somehow students are all taken care of and are able to apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom even before they graduate from the institution. This is beneficial for the School because LSTM graduates can compete anywhere in the world. After my studies, I hope to return to Nigeria putting into practice all I have learnt and acquired in the past year, mostly in areas of programme implementation and public health research as I also hope to start a PhD in the near future.

At LSTM I was introduced to a variety of research methods. MIPH students focused on qualitative research skills in the first semester and many of us did qualitative research studies in our dissertation projects as well. I have completed my field project in Ethiopia and now feel confident in my ability to carry out qualitative research. I really appreciated that LSTM gave me this precious opportunity not only to learn academic theories but also to gain practical research experience in the field. LSTM students, especially in the MIPH course, come from different countries across the world and everyone has different cultural backgrounds and professional experience. Although this diversity sometimes made our group discussion difficult to move forward, on the whole it definitely had a positive impact as we were able to be inspired by a wide range of ideas and perceptions. I believe this is one of the greatest strengths at LSTM. I met amazing friends from all over the world and experienced lecturers who inspired me in a very positive way here at LSTM. A wide variety of topics covered in each session gave me an additional interest in the field of public health, which has enabled me to have a clear picture of my future career options.
This programme equips graduates to provide leadership and technical support in public health in middle and low income countries. It covers the whole breadth of public and global health, including key disciplinary skills in epidemiology and social science and applied topics such as disease control and programme management. Students can follow one of four pathways, which are distinguished by a defined combination of Core and Recommended modules and by a dissertation project on a topic appropriate to the pathway. Students have the opportunity of spending a period of study outside the UK undertaking a client-based or student-initiated dissertation project, which enables them to practise their problem-solving skills and specialist knowledge in a real setting. The project is often commissioned by health ministries, non-governmental organisations or international health agencies in middle and low income countries.
The curriculum has been designed to take account of current national and international priorities and policies in the field of International Public Health. All pathways aim to:
- Provide an understanding of a range of health policies and strategies in a variety of social, epidemiological, cultural, economic and political settings in middle- and low- income countries
- Enable students to comprehend and conduct public health-related research
- Produce graduates who are experienced, committed, informed, proactive and effective professionals, capable of taking substantial and leading professional roles
- Deliver high quality teaching that is informed by current research
- Develop approaches to study that will enable graduates to continue to learn in the future
- MSc International Public Health
This pathway is aimed at students who wish to understand current policies and practice in international public health and to explore approaches to developing policy and enhancing practice based upon sound, evidence-based principles. It aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to be part of senior management teams that develop, implement, and evaluate policies and strategies to improve health in communities, countries and globally.
- MSc International Public Health (Humanitarian Assistance, HA)
This pathway is aimed at students who wish to understand current policies and practice in humanitarian assistance and to explore approaches to responding to the challenges of today's humanitarian problems. It aims to provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding of humanitarian issues needed to practise at a senior level in organisations involved in the prevention of and response to humanitarian crises.
- MSc International Public Health (Sexual and Reproductive Health, SRH)
This pathway is aimed at students who wish to gain a deeper understanding of international aspects of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in middle and low income countries. It aims to provide students with knowledge and skills needed to enable them to contribute to the strengthening of health systems in support of SRH (including maternal & neonatal health, MNH); facilitate the implementation and scale-up of good practice; and raise awareness amongst politicians, professionals and the public of the need for more effective use of knowledge and tools to impact on SRH indicators.
- MSc International Public Health (Planning and Management P&M)
This pathway is aimed at students who wish to gain an insight into the theories and methods of improving and managing health systems and human resources in middle and low income countries. It aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to enable them to contribute positively to the effectiveness of health care organisations using quality and human resource management initiatives.
Many alumni of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) hold prominent positions in health ministries, universities, hospitals and international organisations throughout the world. Graduates are competitively placed to begin PhD programmes, seek employment as research assistants, work in developing countries with a wide variety of employers, or return to previous employers with enhanced knowledge and skills with which to advance their existing careers. This programme provides students with the skills, knowledge and understanding of health issues that will enable them to practise at a senior level in international health in a variety of statutory and non-statutory settings, including local, regional and national government, and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and International Organisations (IOs) involved in health assistance-related activities.

- Open to graduates of health-related disciplines, including medicine, with preferably two years professional experience working in the health system at district, regional or national level, in developing countries.
- Non-graduates, who are suitably qualified by higher study or research, and applicants with satisfactory work experience and evidence of appropriate in-service training will also be considered
The programme is taught in English. Students who are not from *majority English speaking countries as defined by the UK Border Agency must provide proof of competency in English. LSTM’s current minimum requirements are:
- TOEFL 88 iBT (With a minimum scores of 21 for Listening and Writing, 22 for Reading and 23 for Speaking); or
- IELTS with an overall band score of 6.5 (And a minimum of 5.5 in all learning components).
Tests must be within their validity period of 2 years. The two year period is calculated from the test date to the date the CAS is issued.
