Philosophy
We conduct research with to influence health sector policies and implementation strategies in middle and low-income countries. We aim to help ensure systems are:

Equitable in relation to resource allocation, access and quality of care, particularly for those least advantaged;

Efficient in relation to financing policies, management and monitoring, to ensure quality services reaching those in need;

Effective ensuring intended interventions and policies are appropriate and bring about net benefit.

The group works through generation of reliable knowledge, and seeks to influence through existing scientific, political and social structures. We work at various stages in policy development and implementation:

Describing the extent, dimensions and influences of health and social problems of the least advantaged in low and middle-income countries;
Evaluating impacts of health sector policies and interventions;
Exploring more effective approaches to improve health and reduce inequities and poverty.

We have a broad geographic focus dependent on our networks, but mainly work in countries of Africa, China, India and Thailand.

Our research portfolio is in three main areas:

Gender equity and health research, with a focus on applying a gender-equity analysis to health policy and practice; linking with disease control in TB, HIV and malaria.
