The Clinical Research Group has a wide activity profile which covers the four main disciplinary areas of the School:
The group currently has 45 members, of whom, about 20% work abroad at any one time. The group includes individuals with a wide array of clinical, statistical and basic and social science skills and there are strong collaborative links with other research groups within LSTM. Over 37 PhD students are supervised within the group. All of the academics have tropical experience and there is a wide network of collaborations with individuals and institutions in the tropics. There is also an efficient, friendly and helpful group of administrative staff.
Research interests are wide-ranging but include interests in susceptibility to pulmonary infections, equitable systems for effective service provision for TB, HIV, and sexual & reproductive health, clinical trials, non-communicable diseases and gastro-intestinal infections. The group has a total research income of over £20 million.
The group also includes a team of nurses and experts in diagnostic parasitology who help to provide a clinical service in tropical and travel medicine to both the local population and nationally within the UK. There are very close links with the inpatient services of the Tropical and Infectious Diseases Unit at the adjacent Royal Liverpool University Hospital. Members of the group participate in a number of national and international committees on malaria, HIV and TB control and clinical care and we are a core member of the UK National Travel Health Network and Centre.
